For ZonMw, an organization that programs and funds research and innovation in health, care, and well-being, Parella supported the lease renegotiation and developed an initial workplace concept. The objective was to transform an outdated, closed office environment into a future-proof, sustainable, and hybrid working environment that aligns with the organization’s evolving way of working and growth.

The conception & realisation

A sustainable transformation of an existing environment

ZonMw, based in The Hague, programmes and funds research and innovation in health, care and welfare, stimulates the use of this knowledge and identifies knowledge needs.

Parella advised ZonMw on the renegotiation and delivered an initial workplace concept. Our project management team directed and finally realised the entire process in which a traditional office was transformed into a fresh sustainable hybrid working environment. The new working environment is open, future-proof, social and welcoming. In this project, Hollandse Nieuwe provided the design with the following core values: well-being for the user, the use of non-toxic materials in the interior and the right context for the large art collection to stimulate and inspire.

Within ZonMw, the way of working has changed in recent years and the company has grown, so the use of the office has also changed. The working environment no longer functioned optimally and satisfactorily, both in look and feel and in facilities. People come to the office because they want to meet, work together and preferably in an environment that feels as comfortable as home.

Hollandse Nieuwe: ‘We facilitate social contact between users on different floors. Whereas meeting used to be concentrated in one place, in the new design it can be on any floor. The meeting points are always at a staircase or lift, spontaneous and unaffected.’

An existing bamboo floor was sanded and varnished, wall panels reupholstered. Well-functioning installations were not replaced, but upgraded. Detonating, yellowed air vents were also re-powder coated. New LED lighting was used throughout the project and furniture reused as much as possible; existing lockers received new doors, workstations were serviced and upholstered chairs were cleaned. New carpet tiles in the work area are of recycled yarn, bio-backed and therefore net CO2-negative. Floors of the meeting areas are rubberised, the ground floor has a new bamboo floor – matching the existing bamboo floor on the first floor. Acoustic wall coverings are made of recycled and natural leather, wool and felt.

Vandebron

― For Vandebron, a provider of green energy, Parella delivered the headquarters in a former machine factory dating back to 1901 near Amsterdam Central Station. The objective was to create a future-proof working environment that aligns with Vandebron’s sustainable mission while respecting the building’s historical character.
